Flockx Design Exploration

Scope: Design iteration on pre-existing app

Role: Individual Contributor

Timeline: 6 hours

Tools: Figma

Context:

Flockx is a mobile app that allows users to find live events going on near them. A basic prototype was provided to add my designs into.

Problem:

Currently they only are getting 20% of their users to return after their first visit. I was asked to investigate why they were experiencing such low user retention and propose a solution.

Solution:

Added an onboarding flow, introduced notifications to the mobile app, and created a feature to allow users to follow leaders.

Research

My Initial Questions:

  • Are users getting enough information from the app to want to visit events?

  • What information do users need when looking for events to attend?

  • Do people need reminders about events?

  • What makes users return to apps in general?

Identifying industry trends for user retention missing from Flockx

  • Onboarding of users

    • Users enter the current Flockx app with no idea how to use it

    • Show the users how to use your app and they are more likely to return

  • Push notifications and in-app messages

    • Offer genuine value to users through personalization and relevancy

"Engagement is everything when it comes to convincing a new user to stay. If they simply stare at the first screen they see, then they wont last very long."

I completed a competitive analysis of two popular competitors, Eventbrite and All Events in City. I took note of what information they provided for each event as well as looking through the reviews for both apps in the app store. This helped me learn about the ways these types of apps fall short and what users are looking for when it comes to improvements.

Competitive Analysis Takeaways:

  • Both allowed users to follow the event organizer/host

  • Both had integration with social media

Proposed Solutions

Add an onboarding flow

There was no onboarding or tutorial for users to learn how to use the app. With more time I would like to change the background from this light gray/white overlay to perhaps custom animations or stickers.

Allow users to follow leaders and introduce notifications

I added a "follow" button which would alert users when the leader posts another event in the future. I also designed a simple notification screen as well as a mockup of what it would look like to have a notification pop up.

Allow users to promote future events

The current Flockx app does not include a way for users to enter a future event. They only allow events that are happening now. Giving users the ability to plan ahead for an event and receive reminders about the event will hopefully encourage socialites to attend more events and return to the Flockx app.
